Just found out that the Arctic Monkeys will be playing at the Metropolis in Montreal on December 14th. I had said at Osheaga that I would much rather see them play at a smaller venue such as the Metropolis and now they are so it pretty much is an oppurtunity I can’t pass up. It will deffinitly be a good show. I’ll be driving up there with some friends for the show, I’ll post a picture of the tickets later this week once I go get them. I will be picking them up at Metropolis on Thursday, so… It shouldn’t be too long before you see another post, Cheers!

With today being the release date of their new album “Embryonic”, I felt It was only right to declare them this month’s artist of choice. Recently, I’ve been listening to their masterpiece “The Soft Bulletin”. All week long I’ve been returning back to their magnum opus. Such an amazing piece of music there. I doubt they will ever top that, not to say their new music is sub-par or anything. Just personally, that Is my favorite album of theirs. They are branching off into a different spectrum of music with their new album, although not shockingly opposite to their previous work, their new album is deffinitly taking on a different sound. It is more Noise-Rock then ever before. I first got a listen to it when they were streaming the entire album on colbertnation.com Steven Colbert of “The Colbert Reports” website. I was expecting some good ‘ol Lips. You know the kind weve been listening to from their past three cd’s. It was a little different this time. I am deffinitly enjoying the new approach they are taking. The music is still very good, the instrumentals being the highlight of course. I will be picking up their new album sometime this week so I can have myself a physical copy of the piece of music. If you haven’t heard it, it’s all over the internet. But as I say, It is much better to physically own the piece of music rather then downloading it for free. Support the musicians.

Here is the album art for their new album.

I may be a little bit late to say this but… I recently purchased “Perfect From Now On” by Built to Spill. It is honestly one of my favorite cd`s I have listened too In a long while. I had “Keep it like a secret” for a good 5 months now, I love that cd dont get me wrong. However, It didn`t send me into a wave of Built to Spill. I just enjoyed those tracks and never searched for more. How dumb of me. I would never have found this gem had I kept up with that attitude. “Perfect From Now On” Is a beautiful, amazing work of art. The boys crafted themselves a well rounded masterpiece (in my opinion). Track after track this album flows and gets steadily more and more intense. The lyrics and instrumentals are amazing. It makes me think of Modest Mouse – not the music but the way I feel when I hear it.

I feel I should write this and I chose them as this month`s artist to write about because of the intensity and impact the music has had on me. It`s amazing. Also, Built to Spill will be releasing a new album next month titled “There Is No Enemy”. They will also be doing a tour to support this upcomming release. However they do not have a date near me, the closest is in Toronto and I do not have the money right now to go. Too bad they couldn`t come to Montreal. The track listing for the new album will be posted bellow. Now do me a favour and pick yourself up a copy of “Perfect From Now On” and start from there. This album has sparked an interest for me to collect their total discography. Give it a real listen. Built to Spill are an amazing band and even as late as 2009 it is still always nice to be able to appreciate this music.

Here is a link to their new single off of their new album
The single is called “Hindsight” and has been around for a long time now.

It started with a long drive with nothing to think about… That’s a lie. There was plenty to think about seeing as we were going to see Modest Mouse the following day. We got a drive out to some random city in the middle of Quebec about a hour away from Montreal. A friend and I spent the entire day getting really high in the country watching horses and wild dogs… Beautiful scenery. Then we headed back into town at night, we went to the Condo we were staying at got our shit ready and headed for McDonald’s. Smoked two joints while walking down some random city finally we spot a McDonald’s. We get some McFlurry’s and then head out to just wander around the place. After we headed back and crashed. The morning after we got up early, ate breakfast and headed out to Montreal.

As soon as we got to Montreal we took the Metro and headed to our Hotel. We checked in and then we waiting began, we were beyond excitied for Modest Mouse. After we checked in we went out to the Mall and got some food, bought plenty of water and walked around. We went to the park found a nice spot, chilled and blazed. Headed back to our hotel, dropped our stuff off then back out we went. Walking up to the Metropolis we spot about 10 people outside for Modest Mouse, so we go and stand in line. It was a very long wait but so very worth it. It was hot and we had plenty of water, Music Plus showed up with their vehicle hosting their flags outside the venue. I was plenty hungry – seeing as we smoke so much marijuana. So I decided to leave my friend in line and go get pizza. I wen’t down the block and found a little pizza place and I got served by a 7 year old kid. He was cool. Good pizza too…. Back in the line I went, feeling alot better at this point we just chilled until the doors opened.

As soon as they let everyone in me and my friend ran up to the right side of the stage and securing a spot on the gate right infront of Mr. Isaac Brock. I was so happy to have the perfect spot. We waited inside the venue talking with the random people around us until the opening band came on. They came on a little after 8 p.m and played a very short set. It was nice though… I had listened to The Dutchess & The Duke before I went to the show but I didn’t think too much of them. But live I caught myself head bobbing and pounding on the gate along to their songs. Deffinitly a nice small opening band. After they played it was the real wait now. Until the lights dimmed and the boys of Modest Mouse came out onto the stage infront of me. It felt like forever. The guitar tech’s and stage crew rushing all over the stage after the opening band getting thing’s ready for Modest Mouse. After about a 45 minute wait, give or take… the moment was finally here.

Me on the front gate for modest mouse (im in the white with the hat)

Out walk’s Eric Judy, Tom, Jeremiah, Joe, Jim all of em’ then out of our side of the stage walk’s Isaac Brock. Comming out flush faced with his hair in a mess ready to get down to buisness. They grab their respected instrument’s say a few words and launch right into the first song of the night. “Gravity Rides Everything”. They played this at Halifax, the first show of the tour. So I had high hopes of them playing it there. They did… they opened with it! I was screaming and singing along to every word. Mezmerized by guitar crazed Isaac. That 4 minutes was so fucking beautiful. Next came another great song “Never ending math equation”. Honestly, at this point of the show I was like “How could this get any better?” . But it did… Jumping up and down through the whole song. Amazing way to open a concert. Next they started jamming out to Bury me with it which had a nice sing-a-long. Isaac is alot more agressive live then I imagined. He plays guitar so damn good, getting right into the music and dancing like a rushed on coke fiend throwing his guitar in the air and slamming on the whammy bar. The way he screams is beyond amazing live. Isaac is a genius. They came next with “Satelitte Skin” which came out to a rocky start, with Isaac playing the intro three times before they were finally satisfied and finished the song. The song “Education” is so much better live then I ever could have thought. Isaac screamed the entire song and they jammed out on the end which was very epic. The sound was so damn good and never thought the show was gonna have such good sound. When they didn “The World At Large” I was shocked to hear this. Isaac messed up alot on the lyrics but I really didn’t mind. The rest of the band filled in the spaces nicely with the “Buh buh buh” thing. I wan’t to make note of Isaac’s guitar playing during the last half of this song. It gets intense slamming on his guitar in tremelo picking and gaining speed/sound until the song comes to crashing closing. “The Whale Song” is totally epic live. Everything they played was top notch with the boys seeming like they were having a good time, the crowd was pumped. I was screaming along to every damn word. Isaac’s mic had some fuzz when he would grab it, having asked the crew to fix it several times throughout the night. He say’s “Fuck it, you know what? That’s just how it is”. When they played “The Whale Song” I knew what to expect. Althought exceeding my expectations once again I wasn’t left in shock after the song. It was great to hear but not mind blowing for me like some people are saying. He asked the crowd to be quite at one point so he could here what someone else in the crowd was yelling to him and suggested that it was a good idea and they were working tomorrows setlist tonight, haha. Next was “Satin in a coffin” Which was actually supposed to be “King Rat” (According to the official setlists for the show). But something came in the way of that and “Satin in a coffin” was played in it’s place instead. Althought I can’t complain. I’ve wanted to hear both of those songs. I think I would have rather heard “King Rat” but “Satin in a coffin” blew my mind. When he grabs his mic’s and shouts with all his might into them its a sight to be seen thats all I have to say. When they played “Dramamine” They had Dan from Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs come out and jam with them, they added the Life Like Weed’s tease and the new jam, Dramamine live is so good. It must have been about 9 minutes long. I had goosebumps during this song. Watching Isaac in awe not focusing on much else. I wish I had brought my camera. Once “Dramamine” came to an epic finish. They decided it was time to satisfy the children. Say hello to “Dashboard”. I can’t lie, I never liked this song on the album. Live it’s a completely different story. I almost didn’t want to get crazy for this song in an effort not to look like a new Modest Mouse fan. Mind you, I couldn’t help myself. This song is TOO damn catchy live with the drums and everything. Pretty shocked. It was deffinitly good. Next was a song that was not on the setlist “Paper thin Walls” they launch right into it not wasting any time at all. Satisfying, not mind blowing. Once the finished with that they came out with their acoustics. Which is always nice to see. “Here it comes” makes it’s way into the setlist. “Grass grows green.” Absolutely love this song and everything about it. Such a different vibe live but none the less amazing. After that they bursted out “Shit Luck” I don’t know how long that song hasnt been played live for but goddamn it’s so much more powerfull live. I headbanged my ass off up infront of Isaac screaming the words. The next song was also a song not on the official setlist. It was “Black Cadillacs” which is pretty damn powerful live. Wasn’t expecting it to be like that. After which came an epic song. “Parting of the Sensory” at this point I had a feeling they were winding down for the night. The lyrics “We pulled the trigger but we forgot to cock with every single shot, aw fuck it I guess we lost”. When Isaac screams that it is so fucking powerful I can’t explain. It makes me shiver, well it did when I heard it live. Comming to it’s epic closing. I was pouding my fist on the front gate the entire show. So damn good. Then they decided it was time to bust out “Doin’ the cockroach”. About damn time too, the crowd loved it. Well I was lovin’ it. Jumpin’ through pretty much the entire song. Such a damn good live song and they jammed with it a bit. What a nice way to end the main set to the show. After this they walked off of the stage for a good 10-15 minutes. At least it felt that long. When they came back out the place went nuts. They grab their shit and jump into “Interstate 8″. I went apeshit. I’m so fucking glad they played this, making this setlist damn near perfect. I hoisted myself on the gate during the chorus just to get myself that much closer to isaac to scream the lyrics. After that was something I didn’t expect. Here comes the “All night dinner” an older tune that I didn’t even think that they would play at this show. One of the best songs of the night. Isaac was so damn into it. After which they played a nice version of “The View” and closed the show with “Missed the boat”. Could have been a better last song but I really have no complaints. The entire show I couldn’t have asked for more they played some of my favorite songs. Sure there was songs i wanted to hear that I didn’t but I don’t mind. I will see them again. I will post the set-list. I just want to say that I had heard alot of bad and good things about Modest Mouse live, this was my first time seeing them and from this I will say they are fucking incredible. Amazing concert. Probably my favorite concert ive ever been to for the fact that it’s my favorite band.

After this we headed out to the store got food then to the hotel. We slept, I woke up early so i missioned it around Montreal in the early hours of Thursday. Got some smokes, haha. I love Montreal and I love Modest Mouse. After I got back to the hotel I woke my friend up and we checked out. Headed to HMV picked up some cd’s and vinyl’s then to High Times which was closed. I needed a piece for my bong but I was out of luck.

Modest Mouse

arctic monkeys humbug

Having saw them live just over a week ago, I have been listening to alot of Arctic Monkeys recently. Making myself familiar with the Favorite Worst Nightmare Album I realize the true brilliance of the Arctic Monkeys. Their first cd was always my favorite until recently. The direction of their second cd is perfect and shows them moving ahead at a steady pace. With song’s like “Do me a favour”, “505″, “This house is a circus”, “D for Dangerous”, “Brianstorm”. The list goes on and on for special tracks of their second LP. Everything about their second cd makes me think of exacly why I came to like them in the first place. Catchy riffs, brilliant lyrics, pounding drums, everything. The Arcitc Monkeys are the whole package and that’s why they are chosen to be this month’s Artist of the month. Their new album Humbug is set for release next month.

The Tracklist for the Arctic Monkeys third full legnth CD minus the bonus tracks is
1. “My Propeller”
2. “Crying Lightning”
3. “Dangerous Animals”
4. “Secret Door”
5. “Potion Approaching”
6. “Fire and the Thud”
7. “Cornerstone”
8. “Dance Little Liar”
9. “Pretty Visitors”
10. “The Jeweller’s Hands”

I heard a couple of the new song’s live, and they are fairly well rounded live. I wan’t to first make note of Josh Homme (Queen’s of the stone age, KYUSS, Eagles of death metal” Produced this record and has his influence all over it. Don’t get me wrong this is still an Arctic Monkey’s CD but with the couple tracks released, snippet’s, ect. You can hear the influence Josh has over the overall sound of the finished product. Josh Homme infamous for recording in the desert had the Monkey’s out at his recording studio. That in itself gives you an idea of where this record is heading. The Arctic Monkey’s hanging out with Josh Homme in an american desert recording music together. The material released is nothing short of quality. Right now I have been listening to “Potion Approaching” mostly. The slowed down tempo near the end of the song with the muffled/weird guitar solo of the haunting voice of Alex Turner is beautiful and you can feel the vibes of the desert. Even though these song’s were not written out in the desert, it deffinitly had an impact on how it all came out. I am excitied to hear the third album and excitied to see how it all sounds when it’s pieced together. The sound is changing for the Arctic Monkeys, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. It’s a new day for new music. Thank you Monkeys

Well, me and a couple of friends hit up a taxi to the train station at around 11 am on Saturday morning. Once we got onto the train we just sat patiently until we got to Montreal. Once we got there we ate got coffee, then proceeded to walk around the city. Baught a bong, some cd’s & other random things. Then we checked into our hotel room early at around 3 p.m. Wen’t up into the room put everything away then hit the Metro, got the transfer, next thing you know… we are at the park!

Osheaga here we are… as we get there we walk around not really knowing where to go right away, we noticed that they had Bud Camp girl’s, which was pretty nice. We looked at the time and it was already almost time for Somlia’s K’naan. His set started at 4:45 p.m. We got there right before it started we all got two beers each and got right up front for K’naan. Once he came on it was beautiful, the sun was out, the music was great, the marijuana was being smoked & the beer was all over the place. Good vibes for sure, I started dancing along to all the song’s. K’naan played through “If Rap Get’s Jealous”, an acapella version of “Somlia”, Take a minute, Wavin’ flags, among other’s. His set was really great and left us all in smiles and everyone around us. After K’naan finished up we got some more beer and wen’t and sat on the hill.

K'naan live at osheaga

We really didn’t think Osheaga was going to be as busy as it was this year with food lines taking over 1 hour to get served for the most part. We sat on the hill smoked a bunch of weed while the sounds of Elbow was playing in the background. I have to admit these guys sounded damn good, they had a huge crowd for ‘em aswell. After we got done drinking/blazing we went our seperate way’s. Me and Tony one way, Shane & Kurt another way. One for beer, one for Corn. As me and Tony waited in line for our Corn we started talking with some random kid’s who were going on a road trip across Canada. They were chill… The wait in line for Corn was probably about 45 minutes. After we got our Corn we wen’t and looked for Kurt and Shane but they were nowhere to be found, it was packed after all. So me and Tony sat through the last few song’s of Jason Mraz’s set, I am not a fan by any means. I did enjoy his rendition of Bob Marley’s “Three little birds”. It suited the afternoon very nicely. After he finished up his set we walked around waiting until Coldplay came out. Once they came out we were on the top of the hill when they opened with their song “Life in Technicolor”, it was epic from that view but we had to get way closer so we marched through the crowd. Getting closer for the next couple songs “Violet hill”, “Clocks”, “In my place” & “Yellow”. During Yellow they had the giant yellow ball’s floating around the audiance, the sing a long for yellow was great. The place was captivated already. Moving along beautifully through their set they hammered through so many good songs. During the late half of their performance they made their way through the middle of the crowd to play on a platform in the middle of the crowd. They started playing their song “Green eyes” then all of a sudden the Firework Competition at the nearby La Ronde Amusement Park was going on. Fireworks lit up the sky as Coldplay played through an improvised jam marking how special the night was. “We got the moon, we got the fireworks, we got our drummer Will”. It was epic, next a Michael Jackson cover. They played “Billy Jean” Which was another crowd sing along. After this they headed back to the stage where it was the interlude of the show with “Viva La Vida” techno remix playing, the crowd loved it. Once Coldplay started “Lovers in Japan” and the confetti rained down all over the 30,000 plus audiance people were awe struck, the fireworks lighting up the montreal sky, while Coldplay closes their set. An amazing show for sure.

After Coldplay finished up me and Tony headed to the metro stop, which we deffinitly did not expect to be packed we waited in line for an hour and a half in arm to arm crowd moving less than 1 foot per minute to get onto the subway. it was retarded. After we got back downtown we got off at the Berri Quam station and walked from there. We headed to the hotel to find Shane & Kurt pissed sitting there since they didn’t have a keycard to get upstairs to the room, they had been there for an hour, haha. Anyway’s we proceeded upstairs to all chill and then we get a call it’s our friend Jake & his girlfriend Kate. They randomly showed up so we had them come upstairs and we all chilled for the rest of the night, then we slept…

The next morning we wake up, get some ciggarettes and coffee. We grab our bookbags for a hike up to the top of Mount Royal on Saturday morning. We go to the mall to eat breakfast then take the metro up to the Mountain… from there we walked up hill for about 30 minutes then it started to rain… and rained it did, it poured like crazy. we ran up the Mountain climbinb the rock wall’s for a long long time until we get to the top and see the skyline of Montreal covered in fog and rain, it was epic and beautiful we were all shirtless and dancing and screaming. Truly felt like we had conquered the world. Then we all walked down the side of it, it took forever and was very, very steep, the water running down was crazy and it was dangerous and fucking fun. we got off on the wrong side of the mountain on some random street, we all run down the rainy streets to a buss stop, hop on the buss, get off at the metro stop. Hit the metro to the train station exchange our tickets for some earlier ones since Kurt had to work early on Monday. We all go back to the hotel to change our soaking wet clothes, Tony decides to stay back at the hotel and not go to Osheaga. We leave the hotel heading for Osheaga, hit the metro get off at the parc and as soon as we got there. A old man asked me if I had a ticket to sell and I did, which was Tony’s I sold it for 20$ and he gave me a hardtime. Said he was going to “hunt me down” if the ticket didn’t work. The ticket’s didn’t work either since they were soaking wet but they still let us through. Once we got through we ran up for Vampire Weekend who had just started playing “A-Punk” and we caught that and got some beer. After VW played through “Oxford Comma” and “m79″ among others we went to wait for Arctic Monkeys which wasn’t the best idea since they had a long time before they played. We sat through most of Rufus Wainwright who played a very nice set and had his mother come out and join him for two song’s. It was a sweet set. During his performance i began to feel weak and sick, i started getting dizzy and felt like i was going to vomit, I started seeing black spots and I felt exhausted. I went and sat down in the rock’s baught 3 bottles of water and a hotdog. I felt like shit, made myself eat the hotdog and layed back and watched The Decemberist’s do their thing. I love some of their riffs… After about 20-30 minutes of relaxing Jake and his girlfriend met up with us right before the Arctic Monkeys so we all went into the crowd and got really close for AM.

Once they came out it was amazing, I have been waiting to see them for a long time. The crowd went wild when they played “Brianstorm”, “The view from the afternoon” and “I bet you look good on the dancefloor”. Their set was really strict and tight. Played through their song’s really well but nothing really special, I wanted more songs from their first album, but we didn’t get that. None the less their set was very, very nice.

arctic monkeys live at osheaga

After the Arctic Monkey’s I caught the start of The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s set but didn’t stay long. We left and hit the metro after that, fearing the crowd of the night before, but it wasn’t nearly as packed as the day before. I regretted leaving early having missed the Crystal Castles set. Apparently they come on late and had the power turned off on them but still I would have loved to see them at least a little bit. After we got to the hotel we all wen’t down to the bar and started getting drunk. Kurt and Shane left to go the stripclub and then they came back at around 3:50 am. Once they came back Me, Kurt and Shane went back out with Shane leaving to walk around the city and me and kurt walking around. Getting food, coffee. Just spending the early hours venturing around downtown Montreal. Beautiful city, amazing concert. Second time at Osheaga better than the first. I will deffinitly be back again.

The replacement for the Beastie Boys at the 4th edition of the Osheaga music festival is going to be the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. A band that was already booked to play the second day of Osheaga for a 1 hour set from 4 45 to 5 45 or something along those lines. They are now headlining the festival. I would personally rather see The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s play at night and now they are. I still don’t they are the best choice for a headliner, but I can’t control things. Karon O is crazy and I’m looking forward to their set, mind you the collide with the same set as Crystal Castles and I might just go see Crystal Castles instead and catch the end of the YYY’s performance. Regardless, now there is a new headliner and things can continue. They also added the band Vampire Weekend to the second day of the festival to fill the spot of the YYY’s earlier slot. I am also deffinitly going to be checking out Vampire Weekend’s performance. Not too bad of an outcome but could have been better.

VIA Rail decided to go on strike on Friday, it is now Sunday and the Strike is finished. Train’s are schedueled to resume regular routes later today. That is nice, saving me the hastle of going and refunding the tickets. But yeah, just thought I would give you another update and the next post will probably be the Review, stay posted. Thanks for reading.

Since we did it last year and will continue it this year. We are covering the music festival “Osheaga”, In Montreal, Quebec. So far if you want you can see the lineup at the website www.osheaga.com or one of my previous post’s. So some very sad news to start it all off with… Adam Yauch aka MCA of “Beastie Boys” has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in his neck. Very lucky to have caught this in the early stages of the disease. I send him my support. If you haven’t guessed it yet… Beastie Boys inevitably had to cancel the current tour they have planned and push back the release of their upcomming LP.

Day 2 for Osheaga has no headliner as of now. The website has said it will update itself once they have further information about what they are going to do for Sunday night. I personally hope they go and get hometown heros “Arcade Fire”. That would save the festival in my opinion, Arcade Fire have never played Osheaga and they are from Montreal. The Flaming Lips (previous headliners) could also be a suitable replacement. One more to add… Tool. Since they are playing “All points west festival” or something along those lines… In New Jeresy the same weekend Osheaga is taking place. So all 3 of them would be a good addition to the lineup and help save the festival from angry fans and god knows what else. They can’t go on without a headliner… people will demand refunds among other things. Hopefully the powers that be set things straight and it turns out to be a happy ending but who knows really.

More bad news. We have our train tickets to get out to Montreal already. Apparently, this friday VIA Rail Canada will be comming to a clossing agreement on some shit I didn’t read up on but the Engineers might strike. Which would mean obviously no train to Montreal. Now… that really isn’t a problem seeing as we can get there no problem, but still I don’t want to have to go through the hastle of getting refunds for Train Tickets cause some people are demanding more money, but that’s life right…

Anyways the future of Osheaga is not certain but I hold high hopes. ‘Till the day’s after Osheaga you will not know what has happened with me there, haha. For some good news though… I am beyond excited to see Modest Mouse in late August. Going to be an awesome show, a review of that will also be availble.

Apologies for the spelling errors, I wrote this fast. Maybe I will correct it later… I doubt it though.
